A dreamlike platformer that takes us to amazing places.

INSIDE is a puzzle platformer, in which the player controls a young boy that explores a surreal environment. The game starts with a nameless, red-shirted boy sliding down a rocky incline in a forest. While running through the forest, he encounters forest guards wearing masks, who are either inspecting the forest or are intent on chasing and/or killing the boy. Escaping a chase from dogs, the boy goes through various environments: a farm where parasitic worms cause pigs to go rampant, a city where lines of people are moved through mind control, a large factory, flooded rooms, a shock-wave atrium and a laboratory environment where scientists are performing underwater experiments on bodies. The player can make the boy walk, run, swim, climb and use objects in the environment to progress in the game. Later, the boy gains the ability to control lifeless bodies to complete certain puzzles.

Game Features:

  • The game is thematically and visually similar to Playdead’s Limbo, where the player controls a young boy in a monochromatic-like landscape, solving environmental puzzles while avoiding death in a 3D sidescrolling fashion.
  • INSIDE boasts a level of visual fidelity that is absolutely staggering. Every step and stumble formats to the world in a way promised by every Assassin’s Creed trailer and completely absent in every Assassin’s Creed game. The environments are not only varied, but each conform to their own logic.
  • Martin Stig Andersen developed Inside’s audio, following from his work on Limbo. Andersen was influenced by horror B movies of the 1980s, often using synthesizer music, but did not want to actually use synthesizer music in the game. Instead, he created some of the game’s music by routing the sound generated by a synthesizer through a human skull and recording the result, a “bone-conducting sound” that created a “sombre, chill quality” that often was in contrast to the visuals in the game.
  • Inside’s puzzles, both biological and environmental, serve as the vehicle that drives its storytelling. No explanation is ever given for why the boy is alone in the woods at night, nor why he sneaks into the mysterious facility, or what he hopes to achieve there – much less who is trying to stop him. Things happen in this game that are practically indescribable. It’s almost dreamlike in that it can start in a logical, grounded place and somehow end up somewhere far more fantastical.

INSIDE Reviews:

9 Total Score

Inside is a 2D puzzle platformer that builds upon what made Limbo great, and in fact builds something even greater. Gorgeous from start to finish, highly polished and sometimes deeply unsettling. The universe Inside depicts is one of the eeriest, most captivating settings I've ever encountered in a game. Take a deep breath, enjoy the silence, embrace the suspension of disbelief, and you'll be in for one of the finest treats of 2016.
