Headlander

You are the last known human in the universe, and all that’s left of you is a disembodied head.

Headlander is a retro-futuristic, side-scrolling, action-adventure game set in a world inspired by 70’s science fiction, developed by Double Fine Productions and published by Adult Swim Games. Assume the role of the last known human in the universe, and all that’s left of you is a disembodied head. The character’s head, equipped in a special helmet that allows the head to fly around, can also use its tractor beam to take the heads off the robots and use their bodies as needed. Headlander takes place in a futuristic setting inspired by 1970s science fiction televisions shows and movie such as Logan’s Run. In this future, humanity has opted to upload their consciousnesses to a world-encompassing cloud storage, forgoing their bodies but able to occupy the minds of robots as to carry out necessary tasks or otherwise enjoy corporeal pleasures. However, an artificial intelligence named Methuselah has taken control of the robots, trapping the human consciousnesses inside them, and enslaved them for some nefarious purpose. The last human is awoken from cryogenic storage to deal with Methuselah, but only their head has managed to survive the process and is suffering from amnesia. Seeking clues to your fractured past, you must travel through a hostile world of machines using a special helmet that allows you to dock into and take control of any robotic host body.

Headlander Reviews:

7.9 Total Score
Very Good

An excellent side-scrolling Metroidvania game, with nostalgic undertones and great gameplay. Headlander finds smart core mechanics and a really cool idea and pushes them both to smart places that make for a game remains engaging even as it steadily grows more challenging.
